Often it's enough to have some cargo pockets or a messenger bag - other times you want a little bit more...
When I create a holster, I have several key requirements:
I. It has to be extremely durable - if it won't hold up when you need it the most, what 's the point? I'm not making costume props for a single use -- I strive to make Mil-Spec NERF Gear that will last a lifetime. I buy 2" heavy duty webbing so stiff that it has to be hammered into shape. I use steel rivets, heavy duty thread and cordura fabric.
II. It has to have a good fit and be comfortable; I strive to make each piece fully adjustable for most body sizes. This includes elastic portions on leg straps, and adjusters for a custom fit.
III. It has to Include Quality fasteners and clasps: I use Mil-Spec quality quick release buckles, velcro and snaps. Heavy duty rivets hold ultra-thick webbing together at crucial points.
IV. These things need to function! Semi-rigid construction. Extra durable. The holsters are designed and tested to ensure quick draw and rapid re-holstering. You don't want to be fumbling with and fighting your "soft" holster during combat -- you want to switch weapons and go. There is a reason most Spec Ops and Special Forces guys use Kydex holsters: rigid holsters ensure rapid deployment and re-holstering of weapons. While my holsters aren't Kydex, they are reinforced and stiff enough at crucial points to allow this critical functionality.
